Well, 2018 is in the books, and I thought I would do a little review. We have a wonderful selection of free knitting patterns, and I wondered which were the most popular last year.

When I look at the top 10 downloaded free patterns from Alpaca Direct in 2018, I see a beautiful group of projects, and almost all of them accessories. That stood out to me—just one sweater and one blanket in the mix. We love our accessories, don't we?

Here's the rundown!

Raspberry Field Shawl by Jana Markova

This gorgeous shawl really showcases whichever DK-weight yarn you choose to use. We recommend fabulous Madelinetosh Tosh DK, with its amazing colorways.

Mrs. Hupp's Slippers

by Kelley Hobart

Kelley's take on a traditional slipper pattern incorporates new techniques such as Judy's Magic Cast-On. Use cozy Berroco Ultra Alpaca Chunky for these must-have slippers.

Kisses and Hugs Reversible Baby Blanket by Kelley Hobart

Kelley designed this blanket for her granddaughter Evie. It's a super snuggly project perfect for any baby (or as a throw for your home!). Berroco Vintage Chunky is perfect for this blanket because it's washable and warm. Please note that the kitten doesn't come with the blanket pattern! :)

Jubilee by Norah Gaughan

It's not hard to see why this beautiful scarf is in our top 10—it's a lace and cable tour de force. Knit it in any lace-weight yarn; we suggest the yarn used in the photo above, Berroco Ultra Alpaca Fine.

Mairead Slouchy Hat by Tara-Marie Phillips

Mairead is a perennial favorite with our customers. Its easy, effective lace panel breaks up the stockinette stitch in a lovely way, and who doesn't need another slouch hat? Knit it up in shop-favorite Malabrigo Rios!

His and Hers Toe-Up Mukluks by Kelley Hobart

This fun project incorporates the afterthought heel. Knit up Berroco Ultra Alpaca Chunky, you can have these warm mukluks done lickety-split!

Flames Cowl by Kathleen Cubley

I'm pretty proud of this one. I designed it to honor people battling breast cancer and I'm thrilled that it's in our top 10 list! Flames uses an easy lace pattern to create a beautiful cowl. Use a soft yarn like Cascade Eco Duo or Malabrigo Rios.

Moon River Shawlette from the Malabrigo Design Team

This beauty features an easy-to-memorize lace pattern that provides wonderful drape. You'll love working with one of my all-time favorite yarns, Malabrigo Mechita. It's definitely in my top 10!

Pocket Slouch by Kelley Hobart

Because it's knit with sumptuously soft HiKoo SimpliCria, the Pocket Slouch easily slides right in your pocket, so you won't lose it. You won't believe how lightweight, yet super warm, this yarn is.

Feroe Shawl by Lisa R. Myers

Beautiful shaping and a lace border highlight this pretty shawl. Since it's mainly stockinette, this is a wonderful social knitting project. We recommend Rowan Fine Lace for this pattern.

Fountain from the Berroco Design Team

The one and only sweater pattern in the top 10! But it's a good one. Fountain is a classic raglan pullover, stepped up with a lace panel on each side. Written for Berroco Vintage Worsted, a washable wool blend, you'll love this easy-care sweater.
